Our words have power over life and death (Proverbs 18:21.) But we get to choose how we use our words. We can choose to encourage others, or to bring them down. Proverbs 18:7 says, “A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are the snare of his soul.” We can destroy ourselves and others, with our words, so we should choose to speak life and to encourage one another.
Speaking words of life can go a long way and can bring joy where speaking death to one another only brings sorrow. Words of life bring affirmation where words of death tear people down. Words of life can give hope when speaking words of death can cause despair. Words of life are full of love, while words of death are full of hate. Words of life bring people together, when words of death just tear people apart.
So, you can see how much power the tongue has, you just have to choose to use it for God's glory. James 3 has a lot to say about the tongue, verse 9 says: "that with the same tongue we both curse and praise the Lord." How can that be? Our words can change so much based on who we're talking to. Instead of being rude to some people, and kind with others, just speak kindness over everyone. Although you may not feel like speaking life to some people, do it anyway. You could make their day. After all, wouldn't you like it if people always spoke words of life to you?
